St Martins Crowned Winners As First Spirit Cup Is Heralded A Huge Success

Following an exciting three-week tussle for the tournament title, St Martins finally lifted the Spirit Cup for the first time on Friday after a convincing 7-2 win over Vale Rec at Victoria Park.

The inaugural tournament, which played out over a three-week stretch, saw all seven local clubs, comprising Belgrave Wanderers, North, Vale Rec, Rangers, Rovers, St Martins and Sylvans, lace up their boots for the pre-season clash.

They were also joined in the competition by the newly-established Guernsey FC Development team, managed by Leon Meakin, who put in a strong performance before being knocked out in the semi-finals by St Martins.

Thanks to the generosity of headline sponsor Spirit, entry fees to every fixture were waived at the turnstiles, resulting in thousands of fans regularly ‘Packing the Park’ to cheer on their team throughout the competition.

Rob Jones, who presented the winner’s trophy, said: “We couldn’t have asked for a more successful launch for the first-ever Spirit Cup. The performance put in by all the teams over the course of the tournament has been fantastic. Fair play to St Martins, who were strong throughout, and well done to Vale Rec for coming so close.

“It was also great to see the Guernsey FC Development team in action, hopefully this will be the first of many competitions as the squad beds in.

“These tournaments are exactly what Victoria Park was built for, so it’s great to see our ambitions realised. We’re looking forward to the Spirit Cup becoming a regular clash, giving fans a chance to see their teams in action as they establish some pre-season form.”
