A Snaphot of Spiideo

Spiideo - automated camera system for recording and live streaming games

Frazer Maginnis, Senior Centre Coach at Aztech, talks us through Victoria Park’s cutting-edge camera system, explaining how it is revolutionising match days by delivering an enhanced football experience for players and spectators alike.

Can you give us a brief overview of Spiideo?

In the simplest terms, Spiideo is Victoria Park’s automated camera system for recording and live streaming games, but the benefits of this sophisticated tech go way beyond the spectator experience.

At the stadium, Spiideo's auto-follow technology tracks play from three different camera angles – from the main stand and behind each goal – providing enhanced match analysis and data that can be used to improve play.

An added advantage is that the system’s AI-powered cameras automate recording, analysis and broadcasting without the need for manual camera operators. Not only does this reduce human error, but it’s obviously a bonus in less favourable conditions!

Is this the kind of tech that’s used by Premiership clubs?

Absolutely. Wolves, Brentford, Inter Milan and LA Galaxy use it, to name just a few. Plus, it’s also used at the Gothia Cup, the world’s largest youth tournament, so that’s a pretty decent endorsement.

How do players and managers use it? This type of technology offers a huge tactical advantage, particularly in match planning and preparation. By reviewing an opponent’s match footage, we can analyse their playing style, observing any weaknesses and highlighting our strengths.

This type of technology offers a huge tactical advantage, particularly in match planning and preparation.

During the game, we can see the footage straight away on the bench, so it can definitely steer half-time game decision-making in the changing room. The footage can’t lie, so having an accurate visual representation means players can see what they did well or where they need to improve. Reviewing our post-match footage means we can also make tactical changes going into the next match.

For Guernsey FC, I know Tony’s always been interested how data can enhance and improve club training sessions so it’s become increasingly important there. We can really drill into the data to analyse passes, possession, free kicks and where balls have been lost and recovered, and the players also have access to all the stats. It really is a game-changer for player development.

Does it benefit the development of Academy players, too?

That’s certainly an area where we see it delivering some really strong results. We know how responsive these young players can be to seeing how they perform, so being able to show

them short clips or use the tech for classroom sessions will be an invaluable tool for their progression.

What about fans – does Spiideo provide live streaming?

Yep, absolutely. Our live coverage of the Muratti game is a great example of how fans, particularly those in Jersey, could view quality footage when they couldn’t make it to the ground.

Can local clubs use Spiideo to record their games at Victoria Park?

Yes, through our new analysis package, The Edge.

We’re rolling out various packages that will be available at both Victoria Park and across the island, giving clubs access to in-depth individual player statistics and team-specific data within a video timeline.

We know that parents are often eager to support player development, so the packages will also be available for purchase on an individual basis. We believe football should be inclusive so we hope the whole community will take advantage of this cutting-edge technology.

We’ll have more information to follow, so watch this space!
